During our unit about different ways people can communicate, we learned about how a story can be communicated through music. We had as an example the story of Peter and the Wolf, written and composed by Sergei Prokofiev. In this story, each character is represented by a musical instrument. We used our previous knowledge about the instruments of the orchestra to understand how the sound produced by a certain instruments matches with the characters' voices. If you want to enjoy this musical story with your child you can access the link below. In preparation for the International Thanksgiving Celebration the kindergartners learned a song called ‘Things I’m Thankful For’ which they shared with their younger peers during the November EC Gathering. The students have chosen their own things they were thankful for and we included them in the song for the solo parts. They also created the visuals to help them learn the song faster. You can enjoy the song in the video below! Using what we learned about instruments, we have tried to make our own instruments and then we played them together as a band. Everyone was very enthusiastic about this and we had loads of fun. Thank you parents for supporting this project by sending to school the necessary materials! When we inquired into families, we found out that instruments also belong in families according to their common characteristics and the way they produce sound. Thus, we had the opportunity to experience a variety of instruments from the strings, the brass, the woodwind and the percussion families. We had some special guests that demonstrated for us how to play some instruments from the strings family (Mr. Peter) and some from the woodwind and brass families (Mr. Temple and Dr. Taylor). Overall expectations Music is the study and exploration of sound and the expressive use of musical elements through the singing of songs and playing of instruments. Students will gain an awareness and appreciation of music in all its forms from a range of times, places and cultures. Students will sing and play a variety of songs and pieces with an awareness of beat. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with sounds in composition tasks and to make expressive use of musical elements such as pitch and rhythm. They will use notation to develop musical ideas. They will develop an awareness and appreciation of music from different cultures and be able to describe and compare sounds using simple appropriate musical vocabulary. During the first week in kindergarten we sang songs (old favorites and new ones) we played with rhythmic patterns and we moved creatively to music using props.
